The library building was handed over to the council yesterday. There was no fanfare or special celebrations but it was good to take on the empty premises after such a long build up. The first practical sign of the handover was that the council took over 24 hour security of the site last night. Instead of arranging visits to the library through the architects or through the construction company we are now able to come and go as we choose, and without hard hats.
Some building and electrical work still has to be completed but this can be carried out around the library fit-out. The hard work now starts for library staff to furnish, equip and stock the library in time for the opening in the new year.
Our first action was to hire a van, 100 crates and four men to help us move bookstock from a storage unit in Sully. This unit has housed our reserve stock of books for the last ten years but will no longer be needed after the move. The men reported for duty at 8.30 this morning and by 10am made the first delivery of books to the library. By the end of the day they had made several more deliveries and had shelved the books on mobile shelving in the basement.
